Matt Batta 2

Matt Batta - Eagle

This is a golden sculpture of an Eagle made by American artist Samuel McIntire. This Eagle was originally made for the cupola of a large house located at 70 Washington Street in Salem, Massachusetts. This sculpture was created with White Pine and Gilding. At the time, the wealthy merchant Elias Hasket Derby had the house remodeled in 1786, which was most likely when he commissioned this symbol of the new republic from McIntire, who was Salem’s preeminent architect and carver. One thing that interested me about this piece of art was how I noticed the artists name in a few other areas of the museum, so I wanted to see what was the hype with the guy, and I also wanted to research some of his other artwork or sculptures that he may have made that was also in the Museum of Fine Arts. After further researching the artist who made this sculpture, I was able to realize that Samuel McIntire died about 30 years after the sculpture was made and also that he was about 30 years old when he made it. I also found it interesting that they were going to put it in Salem, Massachusetts because thats only about an hour away from where I live.

Matt Batta - John Adams

This was a portrait made by Gilbert Stuart of General Henry Knox in or around the year of 1805. Self Portraits were a huge trend back in the 19th century, and you can most likely find at least one painting of just about any American politician, president, or war general. It says in the plaque next to the painting that the medium that this piece of art was created with was Oil on a Panel. A cultural connection with this painting and the community at the time would definitely be the sudden craze of wanting a self portrait made and also the cannon symbolizes his most celebrated war time during the winter of 1775. I chose this particular piece of artwork because I was really interested in who the man in the picture was and I wanted to learn more about how self portraits were painted and what type of people at the time wanted them painted for them. I researched a little more on the picture and was able to learn things about the painter of the picture and how he was from Rhode Island and died about twenty years after this was painted which I found very interesting, being that the artist lived right around here.

Matt Batta - The Torah Scroll and it's Finials

Art raises many questions, and without the plaques next to some of the pieces of art in the museum, not many people would realize what they’re looking at. When I first lay eyes upon these two odd objects, I did not have a clue what they were supposed to be, but then I took the time to read the plaque that was placed under the case that held the two objects. This plaque said that they were crafted to hold scrolls that were based off of pages from The Torah, which is a Jewish holy book, such as The Bible. These two pieces of art were made from shining silver which caught the eye of the Jewish community and had silver bells that hung all around. The relationship between these two objects and the Jewish community is that much of the Jewish community has read and follows The Torah and the fact that these two silver scroll holders had a great connection to this holy book is very interesting because you rarely see any artifacts like these nowadays, and that is not the only reason why I found these objects interesting enough to write a paragraph about, but I also found that the look of them really caught my eye just like they were crafted to do. The shine of the silver was in my peripheral vision and I just had to catch a glance at what these things had to do with history.
